Paperback Verified download. My first graduate text in electromagnetics was -- no surprise -- Jackson. But it was my good fortune that my professor, who was a contemporary of Stratton, put this book on the suggested reading list. The library catalogue listed two copies: So I immediately knew this was a treasure.

Advanced Electromagnetic Waves

Sure enough, here was much of the physics Jackson left as an implicit exercise. This was also my first and best exposure to Hertz vectors. And the later chapters introduced the machinery needed for basic scattering theory, which filled in some embarrassing gaps in my mathematics before I encountered it all over again in quantum theory.

I watched over the years, hoping that a reprint would appear. I'm really glad to have this volume at my disposal again. I have the paperback reprint. The binding is decent, but I would not try to lay it flat.

The print quality of my copy is very good from start to finish. Excellent value. site Edition Verified download. I wasn't expecting much from this book, given its so-low price. I am so thankful to have bought this book, after loosing my original book from college. Warning - it does contain a lot of vector calculus. So as a prerequisite to this book, get a book on Advanced Calculus.

This book also contains some typos - I believe, due to scanning into electronic format. The text is still understandable though. Very useful. Hardcover Verified download. This is probably the best book available on electromagnetics. I have used it as a textbook in previous classes and found it to be challenging but comprehensive. This book is not suitable as an introductory text because it assumes its readers have a mature understanding of Maxwell's equations and high mathematical sophistication.

I have no further opinion of it as a teaching tool, having only used it as a reference for professional work in the electromagnetic sciences.

Electromagnetic Books

In this role it never fails to provide a systematic and rigorous discussion of the topics it covers. The book is particularly comprehensive in areas of potential theory and contains the solutions to many problems that I have not been able to find elsewhere. Often these solutions are assumed as background for current research publications in EM so having access to detailed solutions can be very helpful.

However, the book has three significant drawbacks as a reference: For example it relies more heavily on Green's Therom than current approaches which largely avoid explicit use of Green's Therom by employing Green's Functions and seeks explicit solutions where numerical techniques could be more easily employed 3 The material on wave propagation and scattering is limited.

All that said, for the right person in the right field, this book is a real gem. This is a great and classical book in electromagnetic theory. Note that is is rather advanced both in context, treatment and notation and I would recommend for graduate or reference use rather than as a teaching text.

One person found this helpful. This is by far the best electrodynamics ever. Professor Stratton truly was committed to teach the subject.

Jackson is encyclopedic but is more an exposition of his personal knowledge of the subject.

Book subject areas

This text is a life saver with regards to writing a senior research paper on my capstone in Physics. Stratton's book fills in the gaps that most advanced engineering electromagnetic texts simply omit. Highly recommended for anyone who is not satisfied with the "handwaving" other texts use when it comes to the fundamentals of EM theory.

Summary Adapted from a successful and thoroughly field-tested Italian text, the first edition of Electromagnetic Waves was very well received. Its broad, integrated coverage of electromagnetic waves and their applications forms the cornerstone on which the author based this second edition.

Working from Maxwell's equations to applications in optical communications and photonics, Electromagnetic Waves, Second Edition forges a link between basic physics and real-life problems in wave propagation and radiation. Accomplished researcher and educator Carlo G. Someda uses a modern approach to the subject. Unlike other books in the field, it surveys all major areas of electromagnetic waves in a single treatment.

The book begins with a detailed treatment of the mathematics of Maxwell's equations. It follows with a discussion of polarization, delves into propagation in various media, devotes four chapters to guided propagation, links the concepts to practical applications, and concludes with radiation, diffraction, coherence, and radiation statistics. This edition features many new and reworked problems, updated references and suggestions for further reading, a completely revised appendix on Bessel functions, and new definitions such as antenna effective height.

Illustrating the concepts with examples in every chapter, Electromagnetic Waves, Second Edition is an ideal introduction for those new to the field as well as a convenient reference for seasoned professionals.
